Jamaica Public Service (a utility company) partnered with the UTECH (University of Technology) to construct a solar energy facility to both provide the institution with electricity, and also to act as a learning tool for the students.

This is a pilot project. Early pilot power plants such as these are actually incredibly important to the local solar industry, because they provide proof of concept that it can work in the area (if it does) to those contemplating power plant construction. Seeing a real plant work is a major motive to go through with building their own.

This project is slated to be launched tomorrow, on October 8, 2012.

If you are unsure about the intermittency of solar energy, read about it here.
