Audi A7 and S7 Say Farewell: RS7 Performance Steals the Show!

The automotive world is full of surprises, and sometimes those surprises involve saying goodbye to favorites. Just recently, we published a list of vehicles on their way out, and now we have to update it again!

Audi has confirmed that the Audi A7 and S7, two iconic fastback sedans known for their sleek design and engaging performance, will not be returning after the 2025 model year. But before you shed a tear, there’s some seriously exciting news: the high-performance RS7 is sticking around – and it’s bringing serious heat for 2026!

For those unfamiliar, the Audi A7 and S7 represent the second generation of Audi’s liftback sedans based on the popular A6 platform. They share a lot with their A6 cousins – powertrains, technology, and interior appointments – but trade a bit of rear-seat headroom for a more stylish profile and a surprisingly spacious cargo area. It’s that blend of practicality and panache that made these models so appealing to enthusiasts.

The RS7 Performance: The Star of the Show

While the A7 and S7 are stepping away, the Audi RS7 Performance is here to steal the spotlight. This isn’t just a continuation; it’s a celebration of what Audi can do when unleashed. Starting with an MSRP of $128,600 (excluding destination charges, taxes, etc.), this beast packs a serious punch.

Let’s dive into the specs:

Engine: A glorious 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing a staggering 621 horsepower.
Torque: A mind-bending 627 pound-feet of torque – enough to rearrange your internal organs in the best possible way.
Performance: Zero to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds? Yes, please!
Tech & Features: Audi isn’t skimping on innovation either. The RS7 Performance boasts a top-view camera system for easy maneuvering and 3D camera views you can swipe through. Opt for the Executive Package, and you’ll get self-closing doors and remote parking assistance – because why not? Heated rear seats are also available in this package.
quattro All-Wheel Drive: Of course, it wouldn’t be an Audi without quattro! This intelligent all-wheel-drive system dynamically distributes power for optimal traction, whether you’re carving through corners or battling inclement weather.

Let’s break down what makes quattro so special:
Multi-Plate Clutch: Under normal conditions, most power is sent to the front wheels for efficiency. But when things get tricky, torque shifts to the rear for enhanced grip.
Self-Locking Differential: This system constantly monitors and distributes power between all four wheels, ensuring maximum control in any situation.

The MSRP for the quattro tiptronic variant of the RS7 performance is $132,700.

A Shift in Strategy: The A6 Steps Up

So, what does this mean for Audi’s lineup? Audi is streamlining its offerings, and it’s not entirely unexpected. This move aligns with a broader trend toward simplification and, crucially, makes room for future electric vehicles. The Audi A7 and S7 are being replaced, at least in spirit, by the new gas-powered version of the A6. The 2026 A6 adopts a Sportback-esque design – think of it as an A6/A7 mashup without officially carrying the “Sportback” name.

This isn’t entirely unique to Audi. Remember how the A4 and A5 lineups recently underwent a similar transformation? The A4 sedan disappeared, with the A5 and S5 “sedans” continuing on as fastbacks. Even the A4 Allroad station wagon was lost in that shuffle. While some might mourn the loss of certain body styles, Audi is aiming for a more focused and efficient lineup moving forward.

A Bit of Confusion (and Opportunity)

If you’ve been following Audi’s releases closely, you know things have been… interesting lately. For 2025, Audi sold two versions of the A5 – the outgoing models and the redesigned ones. It was a bit of an overlap, but it does mean that in 2026, showrooms will be less crowded with similar-shaped vehicles.

And there’s more good news! Audi’s RS6 Avant (the wagon version) is also returning for 2026 – a testament to the enduring appeal of practicality and performance combined.

The Future Looks Bright (And Electric)

While we’re sad to see the Audi A7 and S7 go, their legacy lives on in the new A6 Sportback and, most importantly, in the ferocious 2026 RS7 Performance. This is a transition period for Audi, one that signals a shift towards electrification and a more streamlined product portfolio. But with models like the RS7 leading the charge, the future looks bright – and undoubtedly exciting – for the brand.
