PostgreSQL Tutorials: How To Create A PostgreSQL Database

By Nicholas Brown

You can create a new database in PostgreSQL using the ‘createdb’ or ‘CREATE DATABASE’ commands as shown below. Which command you can use is determined by the kind of prompt you are using.

To create a PostgreSQL database using a regular Linux prompt, you would use the ‘createdb’ command as shown below:

createdb dbname

To create a PostgreSQL database while you are in a PostgreSQL prompt (which means after you start up the PSQL CLI, and it looks like ‘postgres=#‘), you would use the following command:

CREATE DATABASE dbname

Check to see if the database now exists by typing the ‘\l‘ command if you are in a PostgreSQL prompt to list all databases.
