Former Google DeepMind researchers have launched a startup named Reflection AI, and they are building an open-weight model to compete with the top frontier models.
Open-weight models are downloadable models that include the training parameters, facilitating customization. Open-weight is not to be confused with open-source. Open-source models contain the code required to reproduce them.
Until now, open-weight and free models from Chinese developers has been a major threat to the business model of the largest frontier model providers due to their impressively low cost.
Reflection is being built by U.S. developers and can help to address national security concerns about U.S. businesses sending data to foreign service providers. However, the ‘threatening’ local open-weight models from DeepSeek can be run offline on a PC or in an air-gapped environment to protect data.
Nvidia, the company that currently supplies most of the GPUs used to power AI models is an investor in Reflection, and their CEO is a fan of open weight models.
