Microsoft has announced a voluntary exit program in which it pays certain employees to voluntarily retire as they restructure and move towards further automation.
Microsoft’s datacenter and AI-related expenditure have been significant, and the voluntary exit program will most likely help Microsoft to reduce employee-related expenditure as they restructure. The company’s free cash flow declined 23% over the past year.
Approximately 60,000 Microsoft employees are eligible for the voluntary exit program, which is 27% of their 223,000 employees. The program presents a more flexible and amicable way for employees to retire and use the money to start their own businesses or invest.
Employees are required to decide whether they will participate in the program early in December, as they would leave by December 31. Only employees with an experience level of 70 or below are eligible.
The voluntary exit program comes amidst Microsoft’s decision to lay off 4,800 employees in April. AI-related layoffs in the tech industry have disgruntled many, as thousands of people were laid off at each or the largest tech companies during 2026.
